About

Building software got cheap. Looking after it did not.

That gap is why this studio exists, and it shapes how we work.

Why we started

In a short space of time, building working software got dramatically cheaper. Better tools turned what used to take a small team a season into something a determined person can put together in a fortnight. That is a genuinely good change, and the people taking advantage of it are not cutting corners.

But nothing made software cheaper to look after. Backups still have to exist and be tested. Passwords still have to be kept somewhere safe. Somebody still has to be told when things stop working. None of that got faster, and none of it is what the new tools are built to produce.

So there is now an enormous amount of software running real businesses, with real customers and real money going through it, that nobody has ever properly checked. Underneath that sits a second problem: even carefully built software tends to become impossible to change, because it was written for launch day and not for the person who inherits it a year later.

We built Altrazen around both halves. We write software for whoever comes next rather than for the demo, and we take on the software where that never happened.

What we are here to do

Build software that the people who inherit it can understand, change and rely on, and rescue the software where that was never true.

Where we are going

To be the studio businesses call when the work has to be right: for what they are building next, and for what they have already built and can no longer trust.

How we operate

Five rules, each with a cost

A value that never changes a decision is decoration. Each of these has turned down work, extended a deadline or cost us money.

  1. 01

    Honest before impressive

If your software is fine, we tell you it is fine and do not sell you a check. If starting again is the right answer, we say so, even when patching it would have been our invoice. A report that exaggerates how bad things are to justify a fee is worth nothing to you, and we will not write one.

  2. 02

We own the problem, not the ticket

When something breaks, the answer is never that it was outside the agreement. Someone owns your project from end to end and follows a problem to wherever it actually lives, including into parts nobody assigned them.

  3. 03

    Dull choices win

We reach for the least exciting solution that works. Something well established and widely used beats something clever almost every time, because you can hire for it later. We will not add something to your project because we wanted to learn it.

  4. 04

    Write everything down

If only one person understands how something works, we have created a problem. Every change comes with a written record of what and why, so you are never dependent on knowledge that only we have. That includes the day you decide to leave.

  5. 05

    Say no early

We turn down work we are not right for on the first call rather than three weeks in. Saying no on Monday is a short conversation. Saying it after taking your money is a different thing entirely.

Our standards

The rules we actually follow

  • Changes arrive in small pieces. Nobody should have to read a week of work at once to know what changed.
  • Nothing goes live without a way to undo it, and we test that before launch rather than during an emergency.
  • We test the parts where a fault costs money: payments, signing in, and anything that saves customer information.
  • Passwords are never left anywhere they could be found, at any point in a project.
  • Every alert reaches a person. An alert that only appears on a screen nobody opens is not an alert.
  • What we build works for people using a keyboard, a screen reader or an old phone, and that is checked automatically.
  • Decisions that would be expensive to reverse get written down with the reasoning behind them.
  • Clients hear about problems we caused straight away, in plain language, with what we are doing about it.
Team

Who you will work with

A small team, growing carefully. The people you talk to are the people doing the work, with nobody in between.

Profiles are being written

We are growing, and rather than fill this space with stock photographs and invented job titles we would rather leave it until the profiles are real. If you want to know exactly who would work on your project, ask on the first call and we will tell you.

Work with us

Start with a conversation. We will tell you honestly whether we are the right studio for what you need.
